Lagos state Government is demolishing more houses to make way for the expansion of new roads as part of the city’s masterplan. But not everyone is happy about the destruction of their homes.
“I’m happy Lagos is becoming a megacity, but that shouldn’t affect us the way it is,” says one lady from the affected Okokomaiko-Agbara area.
“Some houses were not given demolition notice, and they also demolished the wrong buildings,” says another lady.
The scene in the area is one of rubble and dust as JCB diggers pull down peoples homes. Owners have piled up their belongings in nearby homes, in boxes and large plastic bowls.
Many people have lost, not their homes but their jobs and source of livelihood:
“I’m old and stranded,” says one mama.
Do you think Lagos state can do a better job of relocation and reimbursement to those affected by the demolitions?
